7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Coasts Of Chile & Argentina, Triggers Tsunami Alert & Evacuation Orders


A massive 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina on Friday, prompting a tsunami alert just minutes later. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the tremor hit in the Drake Passage, 222 kilometres south of Ushuaia.

The National Center for Seismology also posted, “EQ of M: 7.3, On: 02/05/2025 18:28:32 IST, Lat: 56.78 S, Long: 67.84 W, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Drake Passage.”

According to news agency AP, Chilean authorities issued an evacuation alert for the entire coastal section of the Strait of Magellan, in the far south of the country.

Citing the threat of a tsunami, the Chilean National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response ordered the evacuation of the beach area of the Antarctic Territory, Magallanes Region.
