Driving in Delhi? Apart from speed limits, you may want to check if your insurance and pollution checks are up to date. Plans are underway to install over 500 artificial intelligence-based Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras across the national capital that will catch violations beyond speeding and jumping red lights. The Delhi government has already issued a notification for the installation of these cameras.

This initiative will be managed by a private company for the next 20 years, and the revenue will be earned through fines from traffic rule violators.

According to information from government sources, a notification has been issued for the installation of high-resolution AI-based cameras to detect traffic violations. The system includes analytics, mobile or tablet-based apps for e-challans, and a central monitoring dashboard. Initially, 500 traffic junctions will be equipped with these cameras, with an option to increase the number if needed.

The government has already installed 350 ANPR cameras, which have helped issue challans for offences like speeding and jumping red lights. Apart from this, more than 2 lakh surveillance cameras have been installed across the city by the Public Works Department, New Delhi Municipal Council, and Delhi Police. However, it is unclear what share of revenue will go to the company responsible for installing the new AI-based cameras.

Enhanced Monitoring of Traffic Violations

The government’s statement highlighted that these AI-powered cameras will be capable of identifying various violations committed by two-wheeler riders, motorists, and commercial vehicles.

Currently, traffic police catch violators on the spot, but the transport department will now use ANPR cameras to detect and fine vehicles violating pollution norms, particularly freight and passenger vehicles. “The high-tech cameras can identify two-wheelers driving in the wrong lane or on the footpath,” an official said.

Comprehensive Monitoring of Rule Violations

The ANPR cameras will also help detect vehicles that have exceeded the 15-year time limit, have expired insurance, or have been reported stolen by cross-referencing with vehicle registration data. According to reports, these cameras will also help in identifying banned vehicles attempting to enter Delhi during the odd-even scheme or GRAP restrictions.
