This festival has played a major role in India’s rock music history, and as a pioneering band, it’s an honor to be part of such a milestone. We remember the early days when rock was just finding its place here. Platforms like Independence Rock gave bands a way to connect with fans who craved something different and louder. Being here now, there’s a deep sense of gratitude for the fans who’ve stood by us and for the new generation discovering us, too. It’s a celebration of rock’s enduring spirit in India.

13AD: It feels amazing, honestly. Returning to the stage after so many years is an incredible experience. The connection with the music that defined a generation and seeing that enthusiasm from long-time fans and new listeners is surreal. When we played back in the 80s and 90s, we were part of a budding rock scene finding its voice in India. Now, we can feel that same energy but with even more meaning. Seeing the excitement in the crowd—whether it’s familiar faces or younger ones rocking out for the first time—reminds us why we started. It’s all about that shared bond through music, and it’s a privilege to experience it again.
Q: Your albums Ground Zero and Tough on the Streets became iconic in the 90s. Looking back, what do you think made those albums resonate so strongly with audiences at the time?
13AD: Looking back, we believe it was our commitment to creating original music. In a time when most Indian bands were focused on covers, we wanted to write our own songs, and that naturally sparked curiosity among audiences. Q: What inspired you to reunite in 2023, and how has the experience been reconnecting as a band after such a long break?

The energy from the crowd at IMA Hall and Thevara College Grounds was overwhelming, and seeing our music resonate with people after all these years was incredible. It felt like a true homecoming. We’re grateful for the chance to share those moments with fans, old and new, who came out to support us.
Q: How has the response to your new single “Nothing Has Changed” been, and what can fans expect from your upcoming bilingual album?
13AD: The response to “Nothing Has Changed” has been fantastic! Fans have really embraced it, and it’s great to see younger listeners connecting with the song too. We aimed to blend a modern feel with classic rock elements, and performing it live has been a highlight. The energy from the crowd, especially younger fans, has been amazing. For the upcoming album, we’re exploring both English and Malayalam, and we’re excited to see how fans respond to this new chapter in our sound.
Q: How did the reference to 13AD in Bheeshma Parvam serve as a stepping stone for your comeback? Did it surprise you to see a renewed interest in the band because of that?
13AD: Our comeback was already in the works by early 2022, but the reference in Bheeshma Parvam definitely brought extra enthusiasm. The response from that unexpected shout-out in a popular film sparked renewed interest, and it added momentum to our reunion.
Q: Over the years, 13AD’s lineup has seen many changes. How have these shifts influenced the band’s sound and dynamics?
13AD: Since our formation in 1977, we’ve experienced a few changes, but our current lineup is nearly the same as when we disbanded in the late 90s, except for our drummer Floyd. This consistency has allowed us to build a strong chemistry, and that continuity has helped us stay true to our sound even as we grow and evolve.
Q: Deepak Dev, a longtime fan, composed “Nothing Has Changed” for your recent shows. What was it like working with him, and how did his perspective as a fan shape the song?
13AD: Working with Deepak Dev, a respected composer and longtime fan, was an absolute pleasure. His passion for music and deep understanding of our history added a unique flavor to “Nothing Has Changed.” The lyrics, written by our friend Thoma (who also wrote “City Blues” from our first album), brought that classic touch. Deepak’s perspective as a fan gave him insight into what our audience would enjoy, and that helped create something relevant and meaningful.
Q: What challenges did you face during your hiatus, and how did those experiences shape your approach to making music today?
13AD: During our hiatus, each of us worked as freelance and session musicians, which allowed us to explore different genres and styles. Those experiences expanded our musical horizons, and when we decided to reunite, we brought all those influences with us. Now, we approach our music with a renewed sense of purpose and confidence, combining our roots with the skills we’ve developed over time.

Playing abroad in Muscat was another standout—it was a significant milestone, showing us that our music could connect with diverse audiences and expand beyond borders.
