The position of an Aide-de-camp (ADC) to the President of India is a prestigious role in the Indian Armed Forces. ADCs assist the President in both personal and administrative matters, ensuring the smooth operation of the president’s office. They act as a crucial bridge between the president and various government departments. In India, senior officers like Major Generals and their equivalents in the Navy and Air Force have aides-de-camp (ADCs), who are usually selected from their own units. The service chiefs that are Army, Navy, and Air Force each have three ADCs. The president of India is supported by five ADCs, three from the Army, one from the Navy, and one from the Air Force, along with an honorary ADC from the Territorial Army. The president can also appoint special honorary ADCs, including senior officers like the service chiefs.

However, the selection of ADCs is an internal process within the armed forces. Candidates who are chosen are usually young, highly skilled officers who are strictly examined across various parameters. The final selection is concluded by an interview process. Hence, if any candidate aspires to be an ADC, then he or she must join the armed forces.

The roles and responsibilities associated with an ADC are:

  1. ADCs are responsible for planning and managing the President’s daily schedule.

  2. ADCs act as the main point of contact between the President’s office and various government departments.

  3. ADCs handle tasks including managing correspondence, making travel arrangements, and providing advice and guidance on personal matters.

  4. They ensure safety and security during official events.

  5. In some situations, ADCs can be called upon to represent the President at meetings or events.

Eligibility criteria:

  1. ADCs are selected from the ranks of the Indian Armed Forces.

  2. Candidates must have experience in government service.

  3. Candidates must be fluent in English and at least one Indian language.

Selection process:

  1. Candidates at first are selected on the basis of their government departments or ministries.

  2. Selected candidates go through a screening process, which includes analysing their service records, performance appraisals, and personal interviews.

  3. Candidates who are shortlisted will have to be interviewed by the high-level selection committee.

  4. The selected candidates again undergo a security clearance process which includes background checks, personal interviews, and a review of their financial and personal records.

  5. After undergoing these four steps, candidates are finally formally appointed as ADC to the President of India.
