Delhi Metro is all set to expand Phase 4 which includes 40.1 km of new underground corridors.
This is part of a major 86 km network spread across five new routes. Three key underground corridors are being built under this plan: Janakpuri West to RK Ashram, Majlis Park to Maujpur, and Aerocity to Tughlaqabad.
These tunnels are set to be the longest in the history of Delhi Metro. Officials say that the tunnelling work in Phase 4 is the most extensive the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has ever done.
In addition to these, two other corridors—Inderlok to Indraprastha and Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block—are still in the pre-tender stage, as per Times Now News. However, Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block and Majlis Park to Maujpur won’t have any underground sections. The Golden Line (Aerocity to Tughlaqabad) will be particularly challenging, as it will pass beneath 17 railway tracks between Tughlaqabad and Tughlaqabad Railway Colony.
A senior DMRC official highlighted that this is the first time the metro will pass under so many railway tracks, with a stretch of about 110 metres to be crossed.
So far, seven tunnelling drives have been completed, and nine more are underway. The longest drive to date was a 3 km stretch from Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash on the Magenta Line, which was completed in September.
Following this, a 2.65 km drive from Tughlaqabad Airforce Launching Shaft to Maa Anandmayee Marg on the Golden Line is also underway.
