NewJeans took home three awards at the 9th Asia Artist Awards, held in Thailand.

The five-membered South Korean girl group NewJeans has been in the news ever since ADOR’s former CEO Min Hee Jin locked horns with HYBE. Months after escalating tension between the two parties, the girl group announced their departure from ADOR, citing the inability to rectify breaches in their contract as the reason. While they have cut ties with the HYBE subsidiary, NewJeans continue with their activities.
On December 27, NewJeans attended the 9th edition of the Asia Artist Awards at Thammasat Stadium in Thailand. The five girls, Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein, put their best fashion forward at the event. They enthralled their fans with an electrifying performance at the ceremony and even took home three awards home. However, their recent appearance failed to impress a section of the people on the internet.
NewJeans, keeping up with their ‘girl next door’ image and stylings reminiscent of the Y2K theme, graced the red carpet of the 2024 AAA. While Haerin was dressed in a buttoned-down shirt and navy blue skirt, Hyein wore a silver dress paired with a blue shirt underneath, and Danielle opted for a cropped shirt and navy blue skirt. Hanni sported a layered outfit comprising a dress, shirt and jacket.
On the other hand, Minji’s simple choice of outfit, a plain tee and skirt, garnered the most attention online. A section of South Korean netizens expressed their disappointment with NewJeans’ styling. They took to social media to criticise their appearance on the 9th AAA’s red carpet.
One user said, “All five of them looked bad, so there’s no point in saying who looked worse or better.”
Another wrote, “Honestly, apart from “Hype Boy,” I’ve never thought any of their performance and ceremony outfits were good,” whereas a third user mentioned, “Let’s be honest, they’ve never really had good red carpet outfits even when they were still under ADOR so why is this shocking?”
One more pointed out, “It’s not just Minji’s outfit that’s an issue—everyone else’s outfits were awful too. What’s going on? Is the current stylist some kind of saboteur sent by HYBE?”
NewJeans announced their sudden departure from ADOR at a press conference held on November 28 at Samseong-dong, Seoul. They stated that their exclusive with the agency stands terminated at midnight KST on November 29. Following the departure, ADOR filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court seeking a legal ruling on the validity of their contract with NewJeans.
