Iran Punishes Two Girls For Making Reels, Taliban-Style, To Face 99 Lashes

The passion for making reels landed two girls in serious trouble in Iran. In Tehran, a video of two girls dancing at a war memorial went viral, leading to their arrest. The video, shared on Instagram, showed them dancing at the Sacred Defense War Memorial, dedicated to soldiers who died during the 1980-1982 Iran-Iraq War. According to reports, the girls wore jeans, with one donning a knitted sweater and the other a cardigan with a blue top. Iranian authorities deemed their attire inappropriate, shut down their Instagram accounts, and arrested them. Under Article 637 of Iran’s Penal Code, dancing in public, whether male or female, is considered an offense against public morality, punishable by up to 99 lashes. Many Iranian women have since protested by posting their dance videos online. This isn’t the first such incident in Iran.
