Central Railway (CR) is set to introduce its first air-conditioned (AC) local train featuring a new design with an underslung motor and electrical system.

This means that key components are placed beneath the coaches, rather than inside them. The change increases seating capacity and offers more space for passengers, promising a more comfortable journey. The new train is expected to begin service by early summer, according to Hindustan Times.

Currently stationed at the Kurla carshed, the blue-and-silver AC train is undergoing extensive testing before its official launch. Staff are thoroughly inspecting its interiors, ensuring the motor system beneath the coaches maximises passenger space.

The underslung motor, already used by Western Railway’s AC locals, improves stability and optimises space by positioning the electrical equipment underneath. CR received this advanced train in November 2024, marking a major improvement in their fleet.

The new AC local can carry 1,116 seated passengers, up from 1,028 in earlier models. Standing capacity remains the same at 4,936 passengers.

To meet rising demand for AC trains, CR is adding a seventh AC local to its fleet, the first new addition in two years. Currently, CR operates six AC locals, with five providing 66 daily services. The seventh train will serve as a backup, ensuring smooth operations and reducing disruptions during maintenance.

A CR official explained, “We’re not increasing the number of AC train services for now, but this extra train will help manage operations more effectively and cut down on cancellations, especially on weekends when maintenance is needed.”

As part of the ongoing testing, CR is assessing potential operational challenges, particularly during the monsoon season. The placement of the motors underneath could cause issues if tracks become waterlogged.

CR’s tracks are lower than those on Western Railway, making them more vulnerable to waterlogging during the rainy season.
