Pakistani troops on Wednesday resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, violating the ceasefire which led to a befitting response by the Indian Army.
Although the extent of damage on Pakistan’s side remains unknown, the security officials said the enemy forces suffered “heavy casualties”. The Indian Army neither confirmed nor denied the information, news agency PTI reported.
The ceasefire violation in the Krishna Ghati sector came a day after two Indian Army personnel were killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in the Akhnoor sector if Jammu district. A captain was also among those killed in the attack which was said to have been triggered by suspected terrorists near the LoC in Akhnoor.

The ceasefire violation along the LoC happens rarely ever since India and Pakistan renewed the ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021.
The security officials told PTI that Pakistani troops fired on a forward post in the Tarkundi area along the LoC, which further prompted Indian Army to retaliate, resulting in “heavy casualties” among the enemy forces.
Meanwhile, the officials said a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army suffered minor injuries after he accidentally stepped over a landmine in the same sector on Wednesday evening.
The JCO, a Mendhar resident, was part of a patrolling party that was keeping a close vigil on the LoC in order to prevent infiltration bids of terrorists. The injured officer was later admitted to the military hospital, PTI reported.
Officials also said that the situation along the LoC remains tense after a surge in hostile cross border activities over the past week.
The ceasefire which took place on Wednesday was the first violation this year and fourth cross-border incident in five days.
In another incident on Monday, a soldier manning a forward post in the Kalal area of the Nowshera sector in Rajouri district when he was hit by a bullet from across the border. An Army patrol was also attacked by terrorists from a forest across the LoC in Rajouri’s Keri sector on February 8. The terrorists were apparently waiting to infiltrate into the Indian side.
