Russian Drone Struck Chernobyl Reactor Shell, Radiation Levels Normal, Zelenskyy Claims

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday that a Russian drone with a high-explosive warhead hit the shell of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Kyiv region during the night.

However, the radiation levels have not increased, Zelenskyy and the U.N. atomic agency said.

“Last night, a Russian attack drone with a high-explosive warhead struck the shelter protecting the world from radiation at the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X.

Zelenskyy shared a video from the alleged drone attack and said that the strike damaged the structure of the power plant and started a fire, which had been put out.

“The shelter at the Chornobyl NPP was damaged by this drone. The fire has been extinguished. As of now, radiation levels have not increased and are being constantly monitored. According to initial assessments, the damage to the shelter is significant,” he said.

Zelenskyy also claimed that Russia carried out similar attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure and cities and was expanding its army with no change in its “deranged and anti-human state rhetoric”.

“This means that Putin is definitely not preparing for negotiations — he is preparing to continue deceiving the world. That is why there must be unified pressure from all who value life – pressure on the aggressor. Russia must be held accountable for its actions,” he added.

The strike came after US President Donald Trump said he would meet Putin to discuss an end to the war with Ukraine.
