Winters Not Over Yet As Fresh Western Disturbance To Bring Snow, Rainfall In These States, Chec


The Indian Metrological Department on Sunday forecasted heavy rainfall/snowfall over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand as an active Western Disturbance is likely to affect Northwest India from 25th February. Along with it, the IMD also predicated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds & hailstorms over East India on 23rd February 2025.

The rainfall/snowfall over Jammu & Kashmir is expected from the 25th of February to the 28th of February, Himachal Pradesh from the 26th-28th, and Uttarakhand on the 27th & 28th of February.

A fresh Western Disturbance, identified as a cyclonic circulation over northern Iran, extends from the lower to upper tropospheric levels. This system is expected to bring increased moisture from the Arabian Sea to the Western Himalayan Region, particularly between February 25-28, 2025.

As a result, light to moderate rainfall and snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are expected across Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during this period. Additionally, heavy snowfall or rainfall is likely at isolated locations in: Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad (Feb 25-28), Himachal Pradesh (Feb 26-28), Uttarakhand (Feb 27-28).

Other Affected Regions Include:

  • Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh (Feb 26 – March 1)
  • West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan (Feb 27 – March 1)
  • West Rajasthan (Feb 27-28)
  • East Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan (Feb 28 – March 1)

A trough from Gangetic West Bengal to South Chhattisgarh, along with an anti-cyclonic circulation over the northern Bay of Bengal, is expected to bring isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) on February 23 across Bihar, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Assam & Meghalaya, and the northeastern states. Similar weather conditions are likely over:

  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Jharkhand (Feb 23)
  • Arunachal Pradesh (Feb 23-24)
  • Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura (Feb 24)

Hailstorms may occur at isolated places in Odisha and Assam & Meghalaya on February 23.

Meanwhile, an active easterly wave is expected to bring heavy rainfall over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on February 25-26, with widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning predicted for February 24-26.

Recent Weather Observations Include:

  • Light to moderate rainfall/snowfall in many parts of Arunachal Pradesh and isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
  • Widespread light to moderate rainfall across Gangetic West Bengal, with scattered showers in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and parts of Northeast India.
  • Heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha.
  • Hailstorms were reported in Himachal Pradesh and Jharkhand.
  • Thunderstorms with lightning were recorded in Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal & Sikkim, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Kerala.
