Numerous instances of erroneous FASTag deductions have left many users baffled. Reports from across the nation reveal deductions from users’ wallets for tolls they haven’t incurred, even when their vehicles were parked or far from any toll plaza.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is taking strict measures to address this issue. According to a Times of India report, officials have attributed these errors to toll operators mistakenly entering incorrect vehicle numbers.

Consequently, NHAI has imposed fines on toll collectors in at least 250 such cases of “wrong” deductions from FASTag wallets. The Toll Management Unit of NHAI has implemented a fine of Rs 1 lakh for each instance of erroneous deduction.

This substantial fine has resulted in a significant decrease of approximately 70% in such cases. The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) now receives around 50 genuine complaints per month, compared to the previous higher figures. Approximately 30 crore FASTag transactions occur across all plazas on the national highway network.

Many affected users have taken to social media to highlight instances of wrongful toll deductions from their FASTag wallets and have also lodged complaints with IHMCL. Users experiencing a similar situation can file a complaint by contacting 1033 or by sending an email to falsededuction@ihmcl.com.

“Such cases are thoroughly investigated, and if the complaint regarding deductions or incorrect manual transactions is confirmed, a chargeback is immediately issued to the customer. Additionally, a fine of Rs 1 lakh is imposed on the toll operator,” a senior IHMCL official stated.

He further explained that these incorrect deductions stem from the manual processing of electronic transactions by toll operators.

NHAI’s decisive action against the wrongful deduction of funds from users’ FASTag wallets includes a fine of Rs 1 lakh on toll collectors for each such error. To date, this penalty has been enforced in 250 cases.
