Kia India, a leading mass-premium car maker, has launched India’s first double-decker freight train to transport SUVs from Penukonda railway station in February.

This innovation is set to transform automotive logistics, boosting car transport efficiency across the country while significantly increasing the load capacity of each train.

Hardeep Singh Brar, Senior Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing at Kia India, said, “With reduced transit times, the waiting period for our cars will decrease, allowing SUVs delivered to our customers faster.”

So far, Kia has transported over 60,000 SUVs across northern, eastern, and western India via the railway network. The new double-decker train can carry up to 264 cars—more than two and a half times the capacity of a standard train, which typically holds around 100 cars.

This added capacity will not only increase operational efficiency and reduce transit times, but also help meet the growing demand of India’s expanding automotive market. When paired with road transport, it will also contribute to reducing the carbon footprint.
