The flyover, which stretches over 2.2 km on the busy Ashok Rajpath, is a vital infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion.
The flyover project, which was originally set to finish in January, now faces a prolonged timeline.
Patna’s much-anticipated double-decker flyover project has been delayed once again, with the new expected completion pushed to March 2025.
Initially slated for February, the delay is due to the land being occupied by the Patna metro rail project, led by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), as per TOI.
The project was launched in December 2021 by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. This 2.2-kilometre-long flyover, situated on the congested Ashok Rajpath, will ease traffic between Gandhi Maidan and NIT More. The structure will feature three levels for vehicle movement, with space for parking under the flyover.
Project Progress & Key Features
Despite the delay, 91 percent of the civil work is done, with the remaining 9 percent expected to be completed within a month. The final tasks, such as installing expansion joints, noise barriers, side railings, painting, and a hanging garden on the pillars, are ongoing.
The Rs 442 crore project consists of two distinct levels:
- First Level: A 1.5 km stretch connecting Patna College to BN College, focusing on the educational corridor.
- Second Level: A 2.2 km stretch linking Kargil Chowk to Science College.
Both levels have two lanes and a width of 7.5 metres for smooth traffic movement. The flyover will ensure a one-way traffic flow, allowing vehicles to move from Kargil Chowk towards Science College and from Patna College towards BN College.
As per officials, all 120 pillars have been erected, while 106 out of 112 spans (which include deck slabs, girders, and other structural components) are complete. Slab work is in progress in areas between Public Health Institute and PMCH, specifically from pillars 25 to 32 and 41 to 43.
According to BRPNNL data:
- 99 percent of the substructure and 88 percent of the superstructure are finished.
- Engineers have managed to build 16 spans per month, with only 14 slabs left, expected to be completed soon.
Additional Connectivity & Parking
The flyover will offer direct access to JP Ganga Path via Krishna Ghat. It includes five ramps for smooth entry and exit at:
- Krishna Ghat (near Patna University)
- Patna College
- BN College
- Kargil Chowk
Construction of these ramps is now complete. The flyover will also be linked to the proposed multi-storey car parking at PMCH through four connecting points, making ambulance movement faster by bypassing traffic congestion.
Future Plans for the Flyover
The flyover’s final phase will involve constructing 12 additional spans from pillar 26 to the PMCH multi-level car park. However, this will only be possible once the new hospital building is ready.
Upon the flyover’s completion, traffic will be diverted to the two elevated levels while the existing road undergoes repairs, expected to take around three weeks.
