Indian Railways has introduced a new policy that will only allow passengers with confirmed tickets to enter 60 major railway stations across the country.
This move aims to reduce overcrowding and improve passenger safety, particularly during peak travel times. The new rule will soon be enforced at key stations in major cities, as per TOI.
The first phase will cover the 60 busiest stations, including:
- New Delhi Railway Station (Delhi)
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (Mumbai)
- Howrah Junction (Kolkata)
- Chennai Central (Chennai)
- Bengaluru City Railway Station (Bengaluru)
More stations may be added later based on crowd control needs.
Why The Change?
While this policy might cause temporary inconvenience, especially for those who usually visit stations without tickets, it’s expected to improve the travel experience in the long run. The goal is to create a more organised system, particularly at stations with high foot traffic, and ensure better crowd control.
Indian railway stations, particularly during holidays, festivals, and busy seasons, often face overcrowding. Many people visit to drop off or pick up relatives, adding to the congestion. This new policy aims to reduce unnecessary crowding and ensure smoother movement of passengers. By allowing only ticket holders, it seeks to alleviate congestion, especially on platforms, and boost safety.
Government’s Plan For Safer Rail Travel
The decision was made after a meeting led by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw with senior railway officials, where the focus was on improving crowd management at key stations. This step is part of a larger effort to enhance passenger safety and streamline operations at India’s busiest railway hubs.
As the policy comes into effect, passengers are advised to plan their journeys in advance and ensure they have a confirmed ticket before heading to any of the affected stations.
