Delhi Metro Update: Delhiites are in for a pleasant surprise, courtesy of the Delhi Metro. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced its plan to introduce cargo services during off-peak hours.
To facilitate faster deliveries, the DMRC has partnered with logistics giant Blue Dart. Packages will be transported in the last coaches of the first few Metro trains, ensuring minimal impact on passenger commutes.
Inspiration From Madrid Metro
This initiative draws inspiration from a similar project implemented by the Madrid Metro in October 2024. However, unlike the Madrid model, which relied solely on freight trains, the Delhi Metro will adopt a hybrid approach, allowing both passengers and cargo to travel on the same train.
Environmental And Traffic Benefits
According to DMRC Principal Executive Director (Corporate Communication) Anuj Dayal, this initiative, the first of its kind in the South Asia-Pacific region, signifies a crucial step towards environmental sustainability and efficient logistics. By reducing dependence on road transport, the service aims to alleviate traffic congestion.
Discussing on the benefits of this new step, Anuj Dayal said, “This solution will reduce dependence on road transport, which will reduce traffic jams and also reduce pollution caused by vehicles.”
Operational Hours
To avoid any inconvenience to passengers, the freight services will operate during non-peak hours, outside of the regular Metro service which commences at 6 am.
