The Congress has called a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) on Thursday over the Waqf Amendment Bill. The meeting will be held at 9:30 on Thursday and will be chaired by party leader Sonia Gandhi, party sources said.
The meeting comes even as the Congress has issued a three-line whip, directing all its Lok Sabha MPs to be present in the House from April 2 to April 4.
Earlier in the day, the government tabled the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha for voting. Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, while tabling the contentious bill, said the legislation has nothing to do with religion, but deals only with properties.
The bill, which seeks to improve the functioning of Waqf properties, address complexities, ensure transparency and introduce technology-driven management, has triggered strong opposition, with critics labelling it unconstitutional and against Muslim community interests.
Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc have accused the government of stifling dissent and demanded more time for debate.
The Congress staged a walkout during the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, protesting the limited discussion time. However, the BJP-led NDA holds a clear majority and is expected to sail through the Lok Sabha despite opposition.
