Mercedes-Benz India Hits 2 Lakh Milestone With EQS SUV Rollout From Pune Plant – News18

Last Updated:

The first 50,000 cars took 19 years to roll out, but the next 100,000 were produced in just 9 years, with the final 50,000 coming in just over 2 years.

The success of the Chakan Plant and the growing local production of electric vehicles like the EQS SUV marks a new era for Mercedes-Benz in India.

Mercedes-Benz India has hit a major milestone. The automaker has rolled out its 2,00,000th locally made car from its Chakan plant in Pune.

This landmark unit was the all-electric EQS SUV, underlining the company’s strong shift towards sustainable luxury mobility.

A Journey of Excellence Since 1995

This achievement reflects the journey that Mercedes-Benz India began in 1995, with the opening of the Chakan facility. Over the years, the plant has grown into a cornerstone of Mercedes-Benz’s operations in India, contributing significantly to the brand’s success. Notably, in 2015, this very plant produced the Mercedes-Maybach S500, marking a historic first outside Germany, as per NDTV Auto.

From 50,000 to 2 Lakh

The production numbers clearly show how fast the brand has accelerated in India:

  • The first 50,000 units took 19 years to build.
  • The next 100,000 units took just 9 years.
  • The latest 50,000 units were completed in just over 2 years.

This sharp rise reflects both the growing demand for luxury cars in India and the brand’s improved manufacturing capabilities.

In 2022, it began local production of the EQS 580 Sedan. In 2024, the brand rolled out the EQS SUV, becoming the first luxury carmaker in India to locally produce two electric vehicles.

Today, Mercedes-Benz India locally assembles 11 luxury models — the widest range of locally made luxury cars in the country. These include the C-Class, E-Class LWB, GLA, GLC, GLE, GLS, and the EQS, among others.
