Bengaluru is all set to introduce a lighter, simpler version of its metro network – the Metrolite. This new rail system is designed to serve areas with lower passenger demand while being cost-effective and space-saving.

Unlike the regular Metro, the Metrolite will run at street level, use smaller trains, and require less infrastructure. It’s part of the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL)’s vision to improve urban mobility across the city, as per Times Now.

What Is the Metrolite System?

The Metrolite is a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system that follows the Government of India’s 2019 Metrolite guidelines. It focuses on:

  • Lower construction and maintenance costs
  • Simplified stations and infrastructure
  • Efficient transport for less crowded routes

Each Metrolite train will:

  • Run on standard gauge tracks (1435 mm)
  • Have three coaches
  • Carry 300 to 425 passengers
  • Travel at 35 kmph on average, with a top speed of 60 kmph

They’ll integrate with the existing metro ticketing system, and features like QR code scanning and NFC payments will be included as part of the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system.

Where Will It Go?

As part of Phase 3 of Bengaluru’s metro expansion, three new Metrolite corridors are planned. All of them will be at-grade (street level) and are still in the planning stage.

Here’s a look at the proposed routes:

Line 1: ORR-West (Hebbal to JP Nagar)

  • Length: 30 km
  • Colour: Orange
  • Status: DPR (Detailed Project Report) not yet finalised

Line 2: Magadi Road Toll Gate to Kadabagere

  • Length: 14 km
  • Status: DPR not yet finalised

Line 3: Whitefield to Domlur

  • Length: 16 km
  • Status: DPR not yet finalised

Additionally, a 52 km route from Katamanallur Gate (Hoskote) to Sarjapur Road via Hebbal is being studied, but not officially mapped yet.

What’s Next?

As of now, none of the routes are approved or under construction, and final DPRs are awaited. If everything goes as planned, the Metrolite could be up and running by 2027.
