Air India, India’s top global airline, has become the first Indian carrier to earn the Good Distribution Practices (GDP) certification for its cargo services.

This prestigious award proves that Air India meets the highest international standards in handling, storing, and transporting medicines and other temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products.

What is the GDP Certification?

The GDP certification confirms that Air India follows strict global rules to keep medicines safe during transit. In the financial year 2024-25, Air India successfully transported over 4,000 tonnes of pharmaceutical goods worldwide, showing its strong role in this vital sector.

The Certification Process

Air India earned the GDP certification after a thorough audit. Inspectors checked quality manuals, temperature-controlled warehouses, change control systems, documentation, safety protocols, hygiene standards, and risk management procedures.

Why This Matters for India

India is one of the world’s biggest exporters of pharmaceutical products. These goods need special care and precise conditions when shipped abroad.

Ramesh Mamidala, Head of Cargo at Air India, said, “This certification provides a shot in the arm to our expertise and capabilities in this specialised space of logistics, assuring partners globally that we are fully equipped to safeguard the integrity of every shipment.”

Where Does Air India Offer Certified Pharma Cargo?

Air India’s GDP certification covers key cargo hubs within India, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Indore, and Goa. Internationally, major airports like New York JFK, Newark, Chicago, London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris, and Amsterdam are also included, ensuring smooth global transport for pharma shipments.

Upgrades and Investments in Cargo Handling

To support the fast-growing medical logistics industry, Air India has made key upgrades, such as:

  • Partnering with GDP or CEIV-certified cargo terminal operators
  • Using temperature-controlled containers (active and passive)
  • Giving special training to cargo staff on IATA’s Temperature Control Regulations
  • Adding new tools like thermal blankets and a cool dolly at Delhi Airport
  • Following strict quality control and tracking systems for full shipment traceability.
