Mohit Malik, who recently marked his Bollywood debut in Abhishek Kapoor’s period drama Azaad alongside Rasha Thadani, Ajay Devgn, and Aaman Devgan, has been in the industry for quite long now. With a career spanning over two decades, the actor has been part of popular television shows, web series, reality shows and now movies. Now, the actor candidly spoke about the evolving dynamics of the Indian entertainment industry. He shared his views on how Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms and films are now dominating the scene, overshadowing traditional television.
In a conversation with Galatta India, Malik stated, “TV me ab aapka kaam koi dekhta nahi, industry wale nahi dekhte. TV nahi dekhta koi. Wo time gaya yaar ki jab pehle TV me apko koi, you know, Shah Rukh Khan ko dikhane ke liye ki he is good, wo time gaya. TV me koi nahi dekhta hai ab. It is a reality. (No one watches your work on TV now, not even the industry people. No one watches TV. That time has gone when, earlier, someone on TV used to show, you know, Shah Rukh Khan to say that he is good, that time has gone. No one watches TV now.)”
He further elaborated on the importance of exploring OTT platforms for impactful work. “They will see OTT, they will see films. Agar apko apna accha kam jo karna hai, wo OTT me karo. TV karna hai karlo, apne liye karo as an actor. (If you want to do your good work, do it on OTT. If you want to do TV, do it for yourself as an actor.) I am not saying not to do it. But don’t expect somebody will see you and actually pick you up,” he added.
Mohit Malik has been a household name on Indian television for the past twenty years, captivating audiences with his charming persona and impeccable acting skills. The actor was seen in shows like Doli Armaano Ki, Miilee, Kullfi Kumarr Bajewala, and Lockdown Ki Love Story. His last daily soap was Baatein Kuch Ankhahi Si.
Beyond television, the actor has also ventured into the digital space with the web series Cyber Vaar – Har Screen Crime Scene, where he starred opposite Sanaya Irani. He has also participated in the reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi season 12, emerging as one of the top three finalists.
His recent foray into Bollywood with Abhishek Kapoor’s directorial Azaad marked a new chapter in his career. The period drama, set in the pre-independence era, narrates the story of a horse rider (played by Ajay Devgn) fleeing from merciless English soldiers. The narrative takes an interesting turn when his beloved horse goes missing, prompting him to collaborate with a young boy (by Aaman Devgan).
In the film, Rasha portrays a member of the royal family, Diana plays Ajay Devgn’s love interest and Mohit essays the role of Rasha’s on-screen brother Tej Bahadur. Bankrolled by Ronnie Screwvala and Pragya Kapoor, Azaad was released in theatres in January, and it began streaming on Netflix on March 14.
