Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, is ready to open the final stretch of the ambitious Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway on 5 June.
The 76-km section lies between Igatpuri in Nashik and Amane in Thane and is now ready for public use. The announcement was confirmed by Anil Gaikwad, Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), as per India Today.
This final stretch of the expressway was built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,182 crore. The funds were jointly provided by MSRDC and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Once fully open, the 701-km expressway will cut down the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from around 16 hours to just 8 hours.
Top Features of the Expressway
The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, also known as Samruddhi Mahamarg, is packed with modern infrastructure and built for speeds up to 150 km/h. Key features include:
- Three major interchanges at Igatpuri, Kutghar (Shahapur), and Amane (Thane)
- A 7.8-km tunnel at Kasara Ghat – the longest road tunnel in India
- Includes 33 major bridges, 274 minor bridges, 65 flyovers, and six tunnels
- It passes through 10 districts and 390 villages.
Currently, travellers using the old Mumbai–Nashik route must climb 450 metres through winding roads of the Kasara Ghat.
