Mumbai’s metro network is getting a major upgrade with the upcoming Metro Line 14, also known as the Magenta Line.

This 45-kilometre corridor will connect Kanjurmarg in Mumbai to Badlapur in Thane district, aiming to cut down the current 2-hour road journey to under 60 minutes.

The new line will be a major boost to the city’s metro network, which is set to expand beyond 330 km. According to Times Property, over 7 lakh passengers are expected to use this route daily, easing the load on the already overcrowded suburban trains.

Construction Timeline and Route

The project is expected to break ground in 2026, once all approvals are in place. MMRDA has already cleared several regulatory stages and is in the process of hiring consultants to carry out environmental and forest impact assessments, as the metro route will pass through ecologically sensitive areas like Parsik Hills and the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary.

Project Cost and Funding Model

The estimated cost of the Magenta Line is a massive Rs 18,000 crore. The Detailed Project Report (DPR), prepared by Milan Metro and reviewed by IIT Bombay, has already received technical clearance. The project now awaits final approval from the Maharashtra government, after which tenders will be issued.

This line will be developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, and care is being taken to avoid issues seen in previous metro projects. The deadline for private firms to submit their bids is 28 July.

40 Stations to Connect Key Zones

The 45-km stretch will feature around 40 stations, combining elevated and ground-level tracks. Key proposed stations include:

  • Kanjurmarg
  • Vikhroli
  • Mahape
  • Ghansoli
  • Ambernath
  • Badlapur

These stations will link major residential and industrial areas, making travel easier for thousands of daily commuters. The line will also have interchanges at Kanjurmarg and connect with Metro Lines 4 and 5.
