Actor Meher Afroz Shaon, Whose Home Was Burnt, Detained In Dhaka For ‘Conspiracy Against Bangladesh’

The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained prominent Bangladeshi actor Meher Afroz Shaon on charges of conspiring against the state, local media reported citing officials.

“She was taken into custody from Dhanmondi on Thursday night,” Rezaul Karim Mallik, Additional Police Commissioner (DB) told the Dhaka Tribune.

The DB chief said the actor was detained on charges of being involved in a conspiracy against the state. According to a DMP media wing notification, Shaon was taken to the DB office for questioning. She had reportedly been critical of Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus-led interim government.

DMP’s Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, said she has been taken into DB custody for questioning regarding the allegations.

Her arrest comes hours after her family home was attacked and set on fire in Jamalpur. Students and local residents torched her house near Norundi Railway Station in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila at around 6 PM, local media reports say. Shaon is the daughter of  Awami League leader Mohammad Ali.
