An Indian-origin man was fatally shot in front of his wife in a US ‘road rage’ incident, with the investigation suggesting the shooting was in ‘self-defence’.

A 29-year-old newlywed of Indian origin was fatally shot in front of his wife this week in what is suspected to be a road rage incident in Indiana, USA, as reported by the police and media. The event took place while Gavin Dasaur was on his way home with his wife, who is of Mexican descent.

A video of the incident was recorded by another driver at the scene. It shows Dasaur, driving a black Honda, getting out of his car at an intersection, and yelling at the driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck in frustration, according to Fox News.

Dasaur is seen with a handgun in his right hand. Approaching the driver’s side of the pickup truck, he strikes the door with the gun. He then transfers the gun to his left hand and raises his right hand to the window of the truck. The pickup truck’s driver responds by shooting Dasaur three times, causing him to collapse instantly. Throughout the seven-second altercation, the shooter remains inside his vehicle.

Indianapolis Police Department (IMPD) officer Amanda Hibschman said officers responded to a shooting report shortly after 8 pm last Tuesday at an intersection on the southeast side of Indianapolis.

Upon arrival, police found a man lying in the middle of the road with at least one gunshot wound. The man’s wife identified the victim. “I held him as he bled out and I was waiting for the ambulance,” Viviana ZaMora, the victim’s widow, told the Indianapolis Star.

Hibschman said the suspected shooter was detained at the scene. “Upon further investigation and after consultation with Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, that individual was released,” the police said, suggesting that the shooter might have responded in self-defence.

The IMPD has announced that the investigation into the shooting and supposed road-rage incident is ongoing. Dasaur’s wife, while grieving for her husband, denounced the shooting. “He was a diligent man who always made an effort to assist others and aspired to provide everything for me and our family,” she stated to the Indianapolis Star.

Dasaur, who was originally from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, and ZaMora had got married on June 29, a little over two weeks before his death.
