BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari Alleges Idol Desecration In Nandigram, TMC Terms It ‘Polarisation Tactic

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Nandigram MLA Suvendu Adhikari on Friday alleged that an act of idol desecration took place in his constituency in West Bengal. The claim follows recent allegations of similar incidents in Baruipur, Falakata, and other areas, over which BJP legislators had staged a walkout from the Assembly earlier this week.

Adhikari, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, took to X to highlight the alleged incident. “The villagers of Kamalpur in Amdabad area of Nandigram II Block were celebrating some local Puja festivities since last Tuesday. Puja and Ram Narayan Kirtan were going on peacefully,” he wrote.

“Yesterday, around midnight, a villager while returning home saw that the idols had been broken. He informed the other villagers, who later assembled and witnessed the horrific act,” he added.

Urging swift action, Adhikari tagged the West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) and demanded a thorough investigation. “I would like to urge DGP @WBPolice to take stock of the situation and instruct the local police to find out the culprits and bring them to justice swiftly,” he posted. He further remarked, “The WB Police need to act tough and refrain from covering the lid on such horrendous acts.”

Bengal Police Say Situation Under Control, TMC Terms Suvendu’s Claim As ‘Polarisation Tactic’

A senior police officer confirmed that a force had been dispatched to the area on Friday and investigations were underway, news agency PTI reported. The officer assured that the situation was under control and noted that Doljatra celebrations in the region had remained peaceful.

Reacting to the allegations, Trinamool Congress (TMC) general secretary Kunal Ghosh dismissed them as an attempt to create division. “Adhikari and other BJP leaders are repeatedly playing the polarisation card in a desperate attempt to gain political relevance, as their vote share continues to decline in every election,” Ghosh said, as quoted by PTI.

“Instead of focusing on issues like economic development and employment, they are flagging religious matters and trying to create divisions in society. BJP’s gameplan will not succeed,” he added.

Ghosh also asserted that the police had been vigilant in every such incident and had taken appropriate measures to safeguard places of worship.
