GST Road, which connects Chennai to Chengalpet, has already been expanded into an eight-lane highway to handle heavy traffic.
The newly opened stretch allows vehicles heading towards Sriperumbudur to avoid a railway level crossing that has long caused delays.
The railway flyover at Singaperumal Koil, near Chengalpattu, has finally opened after 16 years of construction.
Originally, the Highways Department had projected that the flyover would be completed and inaugurated by December 2024.
This new stretch is set to ease congestion at a key junction where Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road meets the Singaperumal Koil-Sriperumbudur state highway, as per TOI.
The flyover provides a bypass for vehicles heading towards Sriperumbudur, helping them avoid a railway level crossing that has long caused delays. This two-lane highway is a vital link for thousands of employees, students, and workers heading to Oragadam-Sriperumbudur, a hub for major automobile and electronics manufacturers.
Previously, vehicles turning left from GST Road would often face long delays at Railway Gate No. 47, which shuts about 20 times a day during working hours.
While GST Road, which connects Chennai with Chengalpet, was expanded to an eight-lane corridor to handle heavy traffic, congestion remains a problem during peak hours. Vehicles heading towards Sriperumbudur often block the left-most lane on the Chengalpet-Tambaram stretch (towards Chennai) as they turn into the narrower state highway.
The situation worsens when hundreds of buses, transporting workers to factories, educational institutions, and IT parks, occupy up to two lanes of GST Road.
Singaperumal Koil town is home to over 30 villages, and thousands of people travel through the area daily for various reasons. Commuters have faced significant challenges, as crossing this busy stretch has often been a nightmare, with heavy traffic causing delays of up to 2 kilometres on the National Highway.
Furthermore, the Singaperumal Koil-Sriperumbudur Road is one of the busiest routes in the suburbs, with lakhs of vehicles passing through daily. Those travelling to Oragadam SIPCOT must use Singaperumal Koil Road, adding to the congestion.
