The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) is all set to begin preliminary work on the Metro Rail project, which will bring major changes to the Ukkadam bus terminal design.
According to The New Indian Express, the Coimbatore Metro Rail will have four corridors, with two to be developed in the first phase once the Union government approves the plan. Ukkadam will serve as the central hub for all four corridors.
CCMC Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran explained that the design will be modified to allow buses on the lower level and a Metro station on the upper level. “We will work with Metro Rail officials to make the necessary adjustments. The changes will be minor and will not require major alterations,” he said.
To accommodate this, the CCMC is redesigning the Ukkadam bus terminal, which is being built at a cost of Rs 22 crore.
According to the detailed project report (DPR), two bus terminals will be constructed: one near the Ukkadam police station, where the current bus terminus is located, and another opposite it.
