Congress, BJP MPs Slam Zohran Mamdani’s Remarks After NYC Mayoral Primary Victory


Zohran Mamdani’s unexpected win in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor has sparked sharp criticism from Indian political figures, with Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut launching attacks over his political views and public statements.

Singhvi Calls Mamdani A ‘PR Win For Pakistan’

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to question Mamdani’s stance on India-related issues. “When Zohran Mamdani opens his mouth, Pakistan’s PR team takes the day off. India doesn’t need enemies with ‘allies’ like him shouting fiction from New York,” Singhvi wrote, drawing a direct link between Mamdani’s public statements and anti-India narratives.

Kangana Ranaut Questions Mamdani’s Identity

Joining the fray, BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut questioned Mamdani’s national and cultural identity, suggesting he “sounds more Pakistani than Indian.”

“His mother is Mira Nair, one of our best filmmakers, Padma Shri , a beloved and celebrated daughter born and raised in great Bharat based in New York, she married Mehmood Mamdani ( Gujarati origin) a celebrated author, and obviously son is named Zohran, he sounds more Pakistani than Indian,” Ranaut said on X.

Who Is Zohran Mamdani?

Zohran Mamdani, 33, currently serves in the New York State Assembly and is the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan-born academic Mahmood Mamdani. Known for his progressive platform, Mamdani has campaigned on housing justice, public safety reform, and international human rights—often positioning himself as a critic of global authoritarianism and militarism.
