Ganga Dussehra is a significant and sacred Hindu festival celebrated annually on the Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha. This day marks the descent of Maa Ganga to Earth. This year, the festival of Ganga Dussehra will be observed on Friday, June 5. On this day, ten types of astrological yogas occur, enhancing the day’s spiritual importance. It is believed that bathing in the Ganga on this day helps cleanse ten types of sins.
The Story of Ganga’s Descent
Dr. Kunal Kumar Jha, Head of the Postgraduate Astrology Department at Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University in Darbhanga, Bihar, explains that, according to mythology, Ganga descended to Earth on the day of Ganga Dussehra. Her divine arrival is said to have washed away ten kinds of sins, making this day spiritually powerful and sacred.
Taking a dip in the Ganga on this day is believed to cleanse the body and soul of various sins. The day is marked by the convergence of ten auspicious yogas, including the month of Jyeshtha, the Shukla Paksha phase, Dashami Tithi, the Sun’s presence in Taurus, and the Moon’s presence in Virgo.
Hanuman Flag Donation and Ganga Snan
Donating a Hanuman flag and bathing in the Ganga hold special importance on Ganga Dussehra. Bathing in the river on this occasion is believed to free one from all forms of sin. The day is also linked to Lord Ram establishing the Shivling in Rameswaram, adding to its sacredness.
