Haryana Man Attacks Devotees At Golden Temple With Rod, 1 Of 5 Injured In ‘Critical Condition’


A man from Haryana allegedly attacked several Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) employees and devotees with an iron rod at Guru Ram Dass Serai in the Golden Temple complex on Friday, leaving five people injured. According to the SGPC, its staff had initially found the man roaming suspiciously inside the premises. When they questioned him and asked for his identity, he got into an argument and was told to leave.

However, he later returned armed with an iron rod and launched an attack on the SGPC staff and devotees who tried to intervene, The Tribune reported.  

The accused was overpowered and handed over to the police. Sarmel Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Kotwali police station, identified him as Zulfan, a resident of Haryana. “The accused was also injured in the incident. An investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack,” he said, as quoted by The Tribune.

Bathinda Youth Suffered Serious Injury

According to an Indian Express report, the five people injured in the attack included a Sikh youth from Bathinda, whose condition is reportedly serious. He is currently undergoing treatment in the emergency wing of Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Amritsar.  

The police have also arrested another suspect, who allegedly accompanied the attacker to the Golden Temple. “The second accused allegedly conducted recce along with the one who attacked devotees,” a police officer was quoted as saying, as per IE.  

The attack occurred inside the historic Guru Ram Dass Serai, near the community kitchen. 

As per news agency ANI, Dr Jasmeet Singh said, ” As per the statements given to us by the patients, an unknown assailant assaulted the victims with a rod. Five patients were sent to us, out of which one is serious and is in the ICU…He is in critical condition. The other four are in stable condition. Brain’s CT scan and X-ray will be done to investigate their injury and treatment will be done accordingly…”

According to the doctor, the assailant is rumoured to be ‘mentally unstable’.

Police Station Kotwali Station House Officer Sarmel Singh informed, “Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has handed over a person named Zulfan to the police. There was a clash inside the Golden Temple premises, and people on both sides suffered injuries. The workers of SGPC have also been injured. Action will be taken according to law.”

Authorities are continuing their probe into the incident.
