The Tamil Nadu government has shortlisted two potential sites in Hosur, Krishnagiri district, for a new greenfield airport aimed at serving the region’s growing manufacturing hub.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is expected to conduct a detailed study of the locations, which are within 20 km of each other, as per TOI.
This decision followed a high-level meeting led by Chief Minister M K Stalin. In September, a team from AAI and TIDCO assessed four proposed sites near Hosur, including Thogarai Agraharam, Shoolagiri, Dhasapalli, and an area close to a private airstrip.
Based on an interim report, two sites have been shortlisted for further study, with the private airstrip location being a key contender.
The government is also in talks with a private company about purchasing the airstrip, provided the asset is reasonably priced.
Srivats Ram, Chairman of the CII TN State Council, believes the proposed airport will become a vital hub for business and logistics across South India, linking Hosur with Bengaluru and spurring growth in nearby districts like Dharmapuri and Salem. Ram envisions the airport as a major driver of economic activity, strengthening Tamil Nadu’s industrial standing.
Hosur, known for its automotive industry, is expanding into advanced manufacturing, electronics, and electric vehicles.
The new airport, set to cover 2,000 acres, will handle up to 30 million passengers annually, further boosting the region’s economic development.
The plans for Hosur’s airport come as the Karnataka government is also considering a second airport for Bengaluru. Having said that, the new airport is expected to not only boost industrial growth in the city but also positively impact the surrounding districts of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri.
