ETA: Thailand has announced the launch of a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for visa-exempt travellers, including those from India, effective December 1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the ETA system aims to simplify immigration processes and enhance the monitoring of foreign nationals entering the country.
“This initiative is part of Thailand’s ongoing efforts to bolster national security and improve the management of visitor flows while maintaining its reputation as a leading global tourist destination,” a ministry statement said.
Visa Exemption Expansion
The announcement follows Thailand’s recent decision to expand visa exemptions to more countries in July this year. The new ETA requirement will apply to citizens of 93 visa-exempt nations, with exceptions made for visitors from Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia.
Key Details of the ETA
The ETA will allow a single entry into Thailand and will be valid for stays of up to 60 days, with the option to extend for an additional 30 days.
Applications for the ETA must be submitted online through a new digital platform. There will be no fee for the application process.

Application and Integration
Travellers can apply for the ETA electronically, with the Thai government planning to merge the system with the existing e-visa process by June 2025. This integration will enable visitors to submit one unified application for travel to Thailand.
Streamlined Entry
One of the key benefits of the new system is faster immigration processing. Travellers with an ETA will be able to use automated immigration gates at checkpoints, scanning their ETA QR code for quicker clearance.
However, officials stressed that visitors must adhere to their allotted stay periods. The system will monitor the length of stay for visa-exempt nationals, and those who overstay may face penalties, including daily fines.
No Guaranteed Entry
While the ETA will simplify entry procedures, it does not guarantee entry into Thailand. Border officials will continue to have discretion to refuse entry if necessary.
