12.9 km Ropeway: All You Need To Know

The 12.9-kilometre ropeway will link Sonprayag to Kedarnath, replacing the challenging 16-km uphill trek or alternative methods such as ponies, palanquins, and helicopters.

According to The Economic Times, the advanced Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology will transport up to 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, with a daily capacity of 18,000 passengers. The travel time will be drastically reduced to just 36 minutes, compared to the current 8 to 9-hour journey.

The project, built through a public-private partnership, is expected to create numerous jobs during both the construction and operational phases, benefiting the local economy. It will also boost sectors like hospitality, food services, and tourism, promoting year-round visitors.

The Kedarnath temple, situated at 3,583 meters in Uttarakhand, attracts nearly 20 lakh pilgrims annually. The ropeway will provide easier access and ensure all-weather connectivity between Sonprayag and the temple.
