The redevelopment of New Delhi Railway Station is set to begin soon, with an investment of Rs 2,469 crore. The station will be modernised with advanced facilities and a new design, starting from the Paharganj side.
Due to this redevelopment, some trains will be temporarily shifted to other stations. If you plan to travel from New Delhi station in the near future, it’s important to stay updated to avoid inconvenience.
According to the Railway Ministry, passenger facilities will be prioritised throughout the project. Instead of demolishing the entire station at once, the redevelopment will take place in phases, with partial demolition starting in March 2026. The project is expected to be completed within 45 months, roughly four years. Evacuation of buildings near the station’s entry road has already begun.
Key Changes Planned
All 16 platforms and tracks will be rebuilt from scratch. Two new buildings will be constructed near Paharganj and Ajmeri Gate, featuring waiting areas, lifts, escalators, and retail shops. To ease traffic congestion, seven flyovers will be built around the station. Two tunnels will be constructed for parcels, along with a parking and circulation area. The new station will follow green building standards, with enhanced security through solar energy, CCTV cameras, and an access control system.
Redevelopment In Four Phases
The redevelopment will occur in four phases. The first phase will focus on platforms 1 to 5, expected to be completed within four months, during which trains will operate from the remaining platforms. Platforms 6 to 9 will be rebuilt in the second phase, 10 to 13 in the third, and 14 to 16 in the final phase. Trains will be rerouted to newly completed platforms as work progresses, ensuring minimal disruption.
New Holding Area
A permanent holding area will be created near Ajmeri Gate to reduce crowding. This facility will accommodate passengers travelling without reservation tickets, allowing them to wait comfortably until their trains arrive, easing congestion on the platforms.
Train Shifts To Other Stations
During redevelopment, some trains will be diverted to nearby stations. Anand Vihar now has two new platforms, and Shakur Basti has three. Trains from Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir will operate from Shakur Basti, while those from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal will run from Anand Vihar. Currently, around 350 trains operate daily from New Delhi, serving approximately six lakh passengers. Although parts of the station may be temporarily closed during construction, train services will continue without interruption.
Travelers are advised to stay informed about these changes to plan their journeys smoothly during the redevelopment period.
