Maruti Suzuki is preparing to introduce a brand-new SUV to strengthen its position in the competitive Indian mid-size SUV market.
Rumoured to be called the Escudo, the vehicle is likely based on a model already available in Japan and carries the internal codename Y17, as per NDTV Auto.
Positioned strategically between the Brezza and Grand Vitara, the Escudo is expected to retail through Maruti’s Arena dealerships. While it was originally planned as a seven-seater, the carmaker has now focused on a five-seater version to align with market preferences and directly challenge popular models like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
Design
The Escudo is said to be built on the same Global C platform as the Grand Vitara. This means a longer wheelbase, which translates to more cabin and boot space. The SUV is also expected to come with fresh design elements, especially on the sides.
Feature-Packed Cabin Expected
Although official details are still under wraps, the Escudo is likely to be loaded with premium features. These may include a 10-inch infotainment screen, ventilated front seats, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless phone charger, an all-digital instrument cluster, and even a panoramic sunroof.
Engine and Gearbox Choices
Under the bonnet, the Escudo is expected to offer three powertrain options:
- A 1.5-litre petrol engine with 101.65 bhp and 139 Nm of torque
- A CNG variant delivering 86.79 bhp
- A strong hybrid option producing 113.97 bhp in total output
Gearbox choices could include a 5-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, and an e-CVT for the hybrid. Maruti is also expected to offer 2WD and 4WD (Suzuki AllGrip) options.
Launch Timeline
While there’s no official launch date yet, Maruti Suzuki’s Escudo is certainly generating excitement as it looks to offer a stylish, feature-rich SUV for Indian families.
