Disney’s Moana 2 is making the right noises and breaking records. Directed collaboratively by David G. Derrick Jr, Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, the animated musical adventure was released in the theatres on November 29. Since its inception, the film has shown no signs of slowing down. Moana 2 has witnessed a global opening of $386.3 million at the box office. The five-day-long weekend, including the Thanksgiving holiday, boosted the worldwide haul further. Dwayne Johnson and Auli’l Cravalho have lent their voices to the titular characters of Maui and Moana in the film.

According to a report by Deadline, Moana 2 earned more than $221 million in five days, including $135.5 million during the three-day weekend. Internationally, the sequel to the 2016 film collected $165.3 million, summing up the total $386.3 collection. Moana (2016) wrapped up its domestic run at the ticket window with a domestic run of $248.7 million and $643.3 million. However, taking account of Moana 2’s current box office figures, it is likely that the second installment will surpass the numbers of the first part. After Deadpool & Wolverine, Moana 2 had the second-highest opening weekend of the year globally.

Moana 2’s box office record topped the charts in almost every market. It had the largest opening for an animated film in France. The same is true for Turkey, Serbia, Nigeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Poland and the United Arab Emirates. Coming to Germany, Spain, the UK, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and other countries, Moana 2 had the second-highest WDAS opening ever.

Previously, Dwayne Johnson, attending the UK premiere of Moana 2, urged the audience to sing when they visit the theatres to watch a musical film. “Sing. You’ve paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, and you’ve gone into a musical, and you’re into it. Sing. Especially if you love music, that’s the fun part,” he said, speaking to BBC.

The plot of Moana 2 takes place three years after the first film. Moana and Maui join forces once again, embarking on another dangerous sea adventure. They are hell-bent on breaking the curse of God Nalo that spelt doom on Moana’s tribe. On their way, the duo encounter old enemies and even make new friends.
