Multiple Casualties As SUV Driven Into Crowd At Vancouver Filipino Festival


A driver drove his SUV into a crowd of Filipino festival-goers in Vancouver, Canada, which resulted in multiple fatalities and left many others injured. The Vancouver Police Department wrote on X that a number of people were killed when the driver drove into the crowd at a street festival on Saturday shortly after 8 pm (local time).

According to the New York Post, the driver of the car is in custody, but it was not clear why the driver ran into the crowd.

In videos circulating the social media, the injured were seen lying on the ground, as people tried to help them. 

Festival-goers were celebrating Lapu Lapu Day, a public holiday that honours Filipino heritage.

In a statement posted on X, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said he was “horrified to learn of an incident at Vancouver’s Lapu Lapu Day celebrations that injured and killed innocent people.”

He said his thoughts are with the victims, their families and Vancouver’s Filipino community, “who were coming together today to celebrate resilience.”

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said in a statement on X, that he was “shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at today’s Lapu Lapu Day event. Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time.”
