Mumbai Rains: Yellow Alert Issued, Heavy Downpour Disrupts Traffic and Rail Services

With the arrival of the monsoon in Maharashtra, Mumbai has been witnessing continuous heavy rainfall since last night, prompting the IMD to issue a 24 to 48-hour yellow alert across coastal districts like Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Thane. The city’s daily life has been significantly affected as waterlogging and traffic jams brought Mumbai’s pace to a crawl. On the Western Express Highway in Goregaon, vehicles that usually move at 40–60 km/h are now crawling due to poor visibility and waterlogged roads. Office-goers are facing long delays as traffic congestion has worsened on the first working day of the week.Mumbai’s local train services, considered the city’s lifeline, have also been impacted. Western Railway trains are running 5–10 minutes late, while Central Railway services face 15–20-minute delays, especially in low-lying areas like Sion and Kurla, which are prone to water accumulation.Airlines have advised passengers to reach airports early and check their flight status due to possible delays. The BMC has urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary and to exercise caution when stepping out. With rainfall levels in May breaking 33-year records, citizens are bracing for 48 more hours of heavy rain.
