To reduce overcrowding, the time gap between two local trains will be reduced from 180 seconds to 150 seconds, and eventually to 120 seconds.
Mumbai’s suburban railway is all set to receive a major upgrade with new trains designed for better passenger comfort and reduced overcrowding.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced plans for these new trains, which will feature improved acceleration, enhanced ventilation systems, and increased oxygen levels for a fresher journey, as per NDTV.
Speaking at a press conference via video link from New Delhi, Vaishnaw shared that the plan for these new trains will be announced shortly.
What’s New in These Trains?
The upgraded trains will feature better acceleration, an improved ventilation system, and higher oxygen content to address the high passenger load. The new design will also include enhanced suspension for a smoother ride.
“Nearly 300 km of new tracks will be laid in the city,” he added, highlighting the efforts to expand the network. To further tackle overcrowding, the time gap between trains will be reduced from 180 seconds to 150 seconds, and eventually to 120 seconds.
The Railway Minister further highlighted that Rs 16,400 crore is being invested in various railway projects for both Central and Western Railways in Mumbai.
To tackle overcrowding, the time gap between two local trains, currently 180 seconds, will be reduced first to 150 seconds, and eventually to just 120 seconds.
A significant Rs 23,778 crore has been allocated to Maharashtra’s railways in the Union Budget for 2025-26, which Vaishnaw noted is 20 times the amount allocated under previous UPA governments.
Additionally, a tripartite agreement between Maharashtra, the Central Government, and the RBI has been signed to ensure smooth cash flow and expedite the completion of railway projects.
