The Bihar Police lodged an FIR on Thursday after they recovered bundles of burnt Rs 500 currency notes, admit cards, and OMR sheets from a room at the Chanakya hostel in Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). A minor fire broke out in the room on Wednesday at the Chanakya hostel but no casualties or injuries were reported.

According to media reports, during the investigation, police recovered several bundles of burnt currency notes, totalling around Rs 2.75 lakh. The police also recovered admit cards and OMR sheets for various competitive examinations along with NEET UG and PG admit cards and OMR sheets. They also found the MBBS OMR sheet of Aryabhatta Knowledge University.

The hostel room where the police found the incriminating material was illegally occupied by postgraduate student Ajay Kumar Singh. The room of the Singh on the second floor had caught fire on Wednesday and three fire tenders were pressed into service to control it. Singh who is now absconding, reportedly, passed his PG in 2022. He was occupying the hostel room and there were three rooms under his control.

“The police were informed by the hostel authorities that the room was illegally occupied by Ajay Kumar, a student of PMCH and a resident of Samastipur. He is absconding. A case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the principal of PMCH,” Abdul Halim, SHO, Pirbahor police station, told PTI.

When asked if the recovered admit cards included those for the NEET (Undergraduate) examination, as reported in some media outlets, he responded, “I can’t confirm that specifically. The seizure list is still being prepared. However, it is true that admit cards for various competitive exams were recovered.” Further investigation is ongoing.

Notably, controversy sparked after several reports of the NEET UG 2024 paper leak and pleas alleging irregularities in the conduct of the examination and seeking its cancellation were filed in the Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court concluded that a retest would not be justified.

While pronouncing the detailed verdict the apex court in August 2024 said that there was no systemic breach in the NEET UG 2024 exam beyond Hazaribagh and Patna. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the NEET UG Patna leak case filed a third chargesheet in October last year and named 21 individuals as accused.
