The New Delhi Railway Station is all set to undergo a major transformation. The station will soon have a high-tech, modern look, with improved facilities for passengers, and enhanced aesthetics. The redevelopment plan, announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in the 2023 Budget, is expected to begin soon. Hoardings announcing the New Delhi Railway Station redevelopment have already been installed, and a large gateway marking the project has been put up at the rear side of the station.
Redevelopment To Be Completed In 45 Months
According to Indian Railways, the redevelopment work will begin from the Paharganj side, where gates and hoardings are already in place. The entire project is expected to be completed in around 45 months.
In the first stage, platforms 1 to 5 will be upgraded, followed by platforms 6 to 9. In total, 16 new platforms and tracks will be constructed to offer better convenience to passengers. Along with this, seven flyovers are proposed near the station to ease the movement of crowds and ensure smoother entry and exit.
Work To Be Carried Out In Four Phases
The redevelopment will be carried out in four phases:
Phase 1: Redevelopment of platforms 1 to 5
Phase 2: Redevelopment of platforms 6 to 9
Phase 3: Redevelopment of platforms 10 to 13
Phase 4: Redevelopment of platforms 14 to 16
Importantly, trains operating from platforms 10 to 16 will continue to run normally during the first two phases. No diversions will be made at this stage. Once work begins on platforms 1 to 9, services will be gradually restored from New Delhi to ensure minimal disruption for passengers. Railway sources confirmed that full preparations are in place to ensure travellers do not face inconvenience during the redevelopment period.
New Delhi Railway Station is one of the busiest in the country, with trains operating from nearly every region. A senior railway official mentioned that a holding area is also being developed on the Ajmeri Gate side, likely to be ready by September or October this year. This space will cater specifically to passengers travelling with unreserved tickets and will offer all basic amenities, including accommodation.
Trains To Be Temporarily Shifted
During the redevelopment, some train services will be shifted to alternate stations. Trains heading to Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir will operate from Shakur Basti, while those going eastwards, towards Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, will run from Anand Vihar. Trains bound for Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat will be shifted to Hazrat Nizamuddin, while services towards Rajasthan may operate from Delhi Cantt. A few trains could be shifted to Sarai Rohilla station.
However, the Railways has assured passengers that detailed information, including a complete list of diverted trains, will be released well in advance to avoid confusion.
