The Rs 1,100-crore elevated corridor project, designed to improve links between the newly opened Mumbai Trans Harbour Sealink (MTHL) and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, is set to be finished by February 2027, as reported by the Indian Express.
Key Features of the Project
The project, led by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), includes two six-lane elevated corridors.
- One corridor will run from the Chirle end of the MTHL to Gavan Phata.
- The second corridor will connect Palaspe Phata to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
- The first corridor will cross the JNPT-Panvel National Highway (NH-348), with service roads along the stretch being rebuilt.
- The second corridor will follow the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH-48) in Raigad district, which will also be widened to six lanes.
Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, called the project a game-changer for regional connectivity. He highlighted how the new infrastructure would ease congestion, especially on NH-348, a busy route for container traffic from JNPT. “Integrating Atal Setu with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will improve key junctions and ease traffic flow,” Dr Mukherjee stated.
The project is being developed by Gawar Construction Ltd at a cost of Rs 1,102.75 crore, with excavation work already underway. Dr Mukherjee also mentioned how the project would improve the daily commute for professionals, making it easier to live in Pune and work in Mumbai.
Once completed, the total length of the two corridors will be 4,958 metres in the Chirle section and 1,700 metres in the Palaspe section, offering smoother travel and boosting economic growth in the region.
