A highly anticipated metro rail project is set to transform travel between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) in Raigad district.
This new link promises to improve connectivity, reduce travel times, and ease congestion in the Mumbai metropolitan region (MMR).
Key Features of the Metro Line 8
- The new Metro Line 8 will cover around 35 km, with 9.25 km of the route being underground.
- The line will start at Terminal 2 of CSMIA and run underground until Chedda Nagar, after which it will be elevated to continue towards NMIA.
- The route will pass through major areas such as Kurla, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Mankhurd, Vashi, Nerul, and Belapur.
According to Deccan Herald, Vijay Singhal, the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of CIDCO, stated, “An ambitious plan is in place to connect Navi Mumbai International Airport and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport via Mumbai Metro in the near future.”
Benefits of the Metro Link
This new metro line is set to improve connectivity between the two airports, making it easier for passengers to transfer between domestic and international flights, especially for those on tight schedules. Additionally, it will help ease traffic congestion on the surrounding roads and reduce travel time for commuters heading to the airports.
CIDCO officials emphasised that the project would strengthen inter-airport connectivity and support growing passenger traffic at both airports.
