If a vehicle is not recognised or the toll is unpaid, the system will send an E-Notice to the owner.

Despite some media reports claiming that GPS-based tolling would launch across India from 1st May 2025, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) have officially stated that no such nationwide rollout has been approved.
Instead, the focus is now on testing a more efficient, ANPR-FASTag based barrier-less tolling system at selected toll plazas.
What Is the New Tolling System?
The upcoming system will combine two smart technologies:
- ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) – Cameras read the vehicle’s number plate to identify it.
- FASTag (RFID-based) – Existing system that enables automatic toll deduction.
Together, these systems aim to allow vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping, saving time and reducing traffic congestion.
Why This Move?
The goal is to offer a seamless, faster and more transparent toll collection experience. It’s also designed to prevent misuse, reduce human errors, and improve efficiency at toll booths.
Drivers will be able to continue using their existing FASTag while benefiting from the ANPR cameras’ vehicle-tracking capabilities.
What Happens If You Violate the System?
If a vehicle doesn’t comply with the tolling system:
- An E-Notice will be issued.
- Continued non-payment may lead to FASTag suspension and penalties under VAHAN rules.
What’s Next?
NHAI has already invited bids for implementing the ANPR-FASTag system at selected toll plazas. Based on how well it performs and how users respond, the government will decide whether to expand it nationwide.
