The approved project will extend the metro line, starting from Sector 51 in Noida and terminating at Knowledge Park-5 in Greater Noida.
In a major boost for the residents of Noida and Greater Noida (West), the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has officially approved the revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the much-anticipated Metro expansion project connecting the two regions. This long-awaited initiative aims to ease traffic congestion and provide a modern, efficient mode of transport for lakhs of commuters in the area.
Metro Line to Connect Noida and Greater Noida West
The approved project will extend the metro line over a 17.435-kilometre stretch, starting from Sector 51 in Noida and terminating at Knowledge Park-5 in Greater Noida. The route will feature a total of 11 stations, providing crucial connectivity for residents travelling within Noida and Greater Noida West. The metro is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion, especially in high-traffic areas such as Gaur City and the nearby 130-metre road that leads to Char Murti.
Partnership for Funding
The total estimated cost of the project has been pegged at Rs 2,991 crore. The funding for the project will be shared equally between the central and state governments, with each contributing 50% of the total amount. The central government will allocate Rs 394 crore, while the state government’s share will be split between the Noida and Greater Noida Authorities. Noida Authority will contribute 40% of the state’s share, while Greater Noida Authority will fund the remaining 60%.
Project Expansion and Increased Ridership
The revised DPR has increased the project’s length from the initially proposed 14.958 kilometers to the current 17.435 kilometers. According to a survey conducted by officials, the ridership on this new route is expected to reach an impressive 1.25 lakh commuters per day once the metro service begins.
For the residents of Greater Noida West, home to a population of approximately 6 to 6.5 lakh people, the approval of the metro project is a long-awaited victory. Local residents have been demanding metro connectivity for years to help alleviate the area’s traffic problems. Deepankar Kumar, a resident of Panchsheel Greens 2, and Rohit Kumar, who lives in Ajnara Homes, both expressed their joy at the news. “This metro project has been a dream for us for so long. We’re thrilled that the UP Cabinet has approved it,” said Deepankar, while Rohit added, “We welcome this approval and look forward to the positive change it will bring.”
The metro expansion has also been met with enthusiasm from the younger generation, many of whom commute daily between Noida and Greater Noida West. The youth, who have long struggled with traffic and unreliable transport, view the metro as a game-changer. “This project has been in the pipeline for years, and we are happy to finally see it approved. It will not only solve our traffic woes but also save us valuable time and energy,” said Arvind, a young professional.
Currently, residents of Greater Noida West often find themselves dealing with crowded autos and other forms of public transport. The introduction of the metro will provide a smooth, comfortable travel alternative, allowing people to avoid jostling with traffic. The metro route will significantly reduce travel time and provide much-needed relief from congestion, particularly in areas like the Gaur City roundabout, Teen Murti, and Ek Murti roundabouts in Greater Noida West.
Though the approval from the UP Cabinet is a significant step, the project still requires clearance from the central government. Once that is obtained, the metro expansion is expected to move forward quickly, bringing much-needed relief to commuters in this rapidly growing region.
