In the world of automotive, the market is flooded with cars across various segments. Being surrounded by a lot of decent options in the market, it feels truly adventurous yet blessed to drive something that looks cute from the outside, and bat out of hell. The BMW MINI Cooper undoubtedly fits in the category for so many obvious reasons.
When the top car makers were busy promoting or introducing new hatchbacks or SUVs, MINI Cooper sat quietly in the corner and refused to grow up. It is like the model is holding a glass of champagne with a smirk on its face, saying, “Keep playing, I’m not here to compete”
Introduction
The first MINI Cooper was introduced in 1959, and since then, the vehicle has remained iconic ever since. It has successfully dominated the market with its unique style statement and impressive performance.
The company has recently added a more advanced version globally named MINI Cooper S. The three-door model has been launched in India at a starting price of Rs 44.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Recently, we got the opportunity to sit behind the wheel and see why the craze of this car remains the same even after so many years. We got our answer after completing 500 km in a few days.
Engine – Pocket Rocket
I know we are supposed to start with design and road presence, as it is the top USP of the vehicle. But, we would dig down slightly deeper and talk about its heart first, the engine! It is the area where the real party happens, and we would like to behave as a good guest who never gets late for any events.
Under the stubby hood, there is an impressive 2.0-litre Twin Power Turbo petrol engine that makes it super competitive in the segment. The unit generates a maximum of 192 bhp and 280 Nm of torque. The power source has been paired with a 7-speed DCT.
Despite looking small, the Cooper S is capable of doing 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds. It feels like giving a double espresso shot to an already energetic puppy, and seeing it chasing big dogs on the street.
The four-wheeler has been treated with multiple driving modes, but we choose to go crazy with a go-kart handling throughout the drive. The chassis did some justice, and made us feel comfortable on the toughest terrains. The use of the centre of gravity in the vehicle, smooth steering and well-developed weighted dynamics made the drive fun, not hectic, especially in urban chaos.
Design, Style and Aesthetics
As they say, looks are subjective and differ from person to person. But, Mini Cooper S surely deserves some appreciation as it stands out in the crowd, a big thanks to its compact design, short overhangs, wide-set LED eyes, and bulldog stance. The road presence is powerful enough to turn heads when rolling anywhere and put a smile on the faces.
It comes with a signature style oval fully LED headlight setup, paired with integrated DRLs, and red-colour S badging on the piano black grille at the front. From the side, it has one body colour door on both sides, which provides access for all occupants. At the back, it gets triangular tail-lamps with individual LED elements, which offer three different animations, including the famed Union Jack pattern.
Cabin Feels
Once you step inside, the cabin welcomes you with a retro-futuristic vibe. From the massive infotainment display ring that supports all the wireless car connect technology to the toggle switches, the Mini S feels like a timeless piece. Fit and finish are premium, and the usage of recycled soft-touch material on the dashboard and doors has been used in balanced way.
Comfort Level
As we mentioned at the start, we did around 500 Km in the Cooper S. The seats were occupied by four people, including the driver. Only front passengers belonged to the 6 ft height category, while the rear occupants had an average height of 5.0 ft and 5.10. While covering the distance, we felt utmost comfort, all credit goes to the seat cushioning, headroom and leg room.
The rear passengers did not cause any chaos due to less space. It seemed like they were more indulged in German engineering and had more reasons to enjoy the drive rather than complaining.
Any Disappointments?
Well, if you have listed the Cooper S in your priority list, and expecting fuel economy and boot space, you are choosing the wrong car then. Somehow, the vehicle is unapologetically impractical as the 211-litre boot only allows you to put weekend bags, not wardrobes.
The rear seat somewhat feels practical, but it cannot be considered a family hatchback. If you are ready to ignore the above-mentioned pointers, Cooper S will not let you regret your choice. It is an indulgent, emotional purchase that stirs your soul every time you drive it.
Here’s What We Feel
Under the price range between Rs 44.90 lakh to Rs 55.90 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom) in India, the MINI Cooper S surely isn’t a cheap deal. Still, the kind of performance, cutting-edge technology, jaw-dropping styling, and impeccable quality it offers, the model justifies the sticker price in ways most luxury sedans cannot. If you are into less features and more driving feels, the latest offering from the brand could be the wise.
