The top ride-hailing platforms Uber, Ula and Rapido have gained a massive ridership lately. Now, these applications have started taking advantage of the customers’ needs in every way possible.
Recently, Uber and Rapido’s advanced tipping feature has been slammed by both customers and the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) for doing business in an unethical way and charging extra from customers for no reason.
Here’s How the Feature Works
According to these leading apps, the tipping feature helps customers find the rider faster, as the driver is more likely to accept the ride if the tip is added while booking the cab. It is an additional charge that is being deducted beyond the actual amount of the ride. It gives customers more priority as compared to those who refuse to pay tips.
CCPA Raises Concern
According to the report, the CCPA has raised concerns and issued a notice to ride-hailing application Uber for encouraging the “add a tip for faster pickup” feature. It has been called an unethical way of charging extra from the customers, making every ride more expensive than ever.
Investigation Underway
Expressing the views about the same views, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, said the CCPA is now investigating the matter. The concerned department has already shifted the focus to top ride-hailing apps like Uber, Ola and Rapido, putting them under the CCPA’s scanner.
Customers’ Reaction
Social Media platforms, especially X, formerly known as Twitter, are filled with negative comments by users who have been facing the unethical way of charging more. While some customers demanded a strict ban on these applications, some asked the authorities to take legal action and remove the feature as soon as possible.
