Parliamentary Panel urges fast-tracking census, calls for more funding for forces

New Delhi: A parliamentary panel, chaired by BJP MP Radha Mohan Das, has urged for the immediate completion of the Census.

In its report, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs highlighted significant downward revisions to the budgets for the Intelligence Bureau (IB), NATGRID, Central Police Organizations (CPOs), and Delhi Police. It recommended that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) engage with the Ministry of Finance to secure increased allocations in line with initial projections.

The report, tabled last week, also acknowledged the progress in preparatory work for the Census and National Population Register (NPR), including improvements in technological infrastructure and data management systems. These include the development of geospatial databases, the Census Mapping Portal, and updates to the Civil Registration System (CRS) portal.

The committee also noted the assurance from the ministry that additional funds for Census-related activities may be provided during the Revised Estimates (RE) stage if needed, and it strongly recommended the earliest completion of the Census.

Additionally, the panel pointed out that allocations for the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) fall short of projections, with cuts observed in the CRPF, NSG, BSF, ITBP, Assam Rifles, and SSB.
