Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritius counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam held a bilateral meeting on Wednesday where they signed eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to boost bilateral ties between the two nations. The MoUs include enhanced cooperation across various sectors including financial crime prevention, SMEs, public service capacity building, maritime security, and local currency trade.
While delivering a joint statement, PM Modi announced a “gift to Mauritius from the Mother of Democracy” as he said India will support Mauritius in setting up of a new Parliament building and Phase-II of High Impact Community Development projects.
“Today, Prime Minister Navin Chandra Ramgoolam and I decided to give the India-Mauritius partnership the status of ‘Enhanced Strategic Partnership’. We decided that India will cooperate in building the new Parliament building in Mauritius. This will be a gift to Mauritius from the Mother of Democracy,” he said.
Together, PM Modi and PM Ramgoolam e-inaugurated 20 High-Impact Community Development Projects and an India-assisted Area Health Centre (AHC).

The Eight MoUs Inked By India-Mauritius
- MoU between the Central Bank of Mauritius and the Reserve Bank of India to establish a framework to promote use of local currencies.
- MoU on Credit Facility Agreement between the Government of Mauritius and the State Bank of India to finance the ‘Water Pipeline Replacement Project’.
- MoU between the ministry of Industry, SME and Cooperatives (SME division) of the Republic of Mauritius and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of the Republic of India on cooperation in the field of micro, small and medium enterprises for training, exchanging business missions, and providing technical assistance to organisations.
- MoU to augment capacity building of Mauritian diplomats at Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and promote contacts and exchange of diplomats, experts, and faculty members.
- MoU to undertake training of 500 Mauritian Civil Servants over 5 years at the National Centre for Good Governance.
- MoU on sharing of White Shipping Information between Indian Navy and Government of Mauritius to enhance Mauritius’ maritime security, trade safety, and regional cooperation.

Memorandum of Understanding between Directorate of Enforcement (ED) and Financial Crimes Commission of the Republic of Mauritius (FCC) to provide intelligence and technical assistance cooperation on anti-corruption and anti-money laundering activities.
- MoU between the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Ministry of Earth Sciences of India, and the Department for Continental Shelf, Maritime Zones Administration and Exploration, Prime Minister’s Office of Mauritius to establish a comprehensive framework for cooperation on ocean observation, research, and information management, enhancing maritime zone management.
